Living / Storage: Upholstered furniture on the move - greater ease of use with ball bearing guides
The IMM 2018 fair in Cologne once again presented itself as a showcase for current and future living comfort. The variety of comfort and adjustment mechanisms impressed visitors, especially in the field of upholstered furniture and recliners. These can be operated both manually and electrically, which means corresponding requirements for the functional components used.
Modern upholstered furniture can be adapted to the individual needs of its users at the push of a button. Parts for feet extend under the seat or disappear silently under the surface of the seat. Armrests can be adjusted in height or laterally. If necessary, shelves or storage compartments are also available. This is because today, seating is used flexibly as space for living, dining or even sleeping. Often, strong forces from different directions have an impact on the guides, which, as a consequence, are extremely stressed. In motorised mechanisms, a particularly steady and smooth sequence of motions is required so that used batteries with low power can manage and the user can adjust the systems ergonomically and easily. Thanks to its range of ball bearing pull-out systems, the roll forming specialist Schock Metallwerk GmbH is also a sought-after partner for talks and development within this market segment. As Daniel Hoefer, Head of Marketing explains, "The tailor-made configuration of the guidance systems represents a significant potential for cost savings as well as achieving the development goals of upholstered furniture manufacturers". The broad product range, with over 30 rail profiles, forms the basis for providing the right solution for every application. For an optimal connection strategy, there is also a large range of mounting systems available, from hole patterns, lugs and spacer bridges through to mounting brackets and integrated threaded bolts. High-performance surfaces for different colour and decor requirements round off the range of products and ensure invisible technology with a long, maintenance-free service life. As a result of the patented "Air Motion" technology, the individual configuration of the running characteristics also offers a significant advantage. This combines particularly smooth running with a synchro effect and a soft stopper systems. The path of the pull-out can also be individually defined in order to meet the requirements for stability, distance to be travelled and need for space.
As an EMAS-validated company, Schock Metall takes sustainable aspects of environmental protection into account during the development of products. A well-known German and EMAS-certified manufacturer of upholstered furniture recently realised one of its environmental goals by replacing a three-step footrest with a one-piece system. The new concept was based on "Air Motion" smooth running, ball bearing guides with an individual connection (see illustration). As a result of the smooth running, it was possible to use a smaller motor for the electrical adjustment as well as reduce the power consumption. The integrated mounting brackets helped to reduce the variety of parts and assembly time. And the powder-coated surface in a colour that corresponds to the paint of the kinematics system ensured a uniform, inconspicuous appearance. After all, the focus is on seating comfort.
